  21.                  Auto-Logging! This command line option
  22.                  (/A[B/D/E/L/N/O/S]) causes Snooper to log whatever
  23.                  screens you want, automatically, with no user
  24.                  intervention. This is perfect for gathering hardware
  25.                  inventory for an entire network through a login script.
  26.                  See SNOOPER.DOC for full details about how to use this
  27.                  powerful feature.
  28. 3.28       3/94  Improved modem detection, making it faster and more
  29.                  reliable.
  30. 3.27       2/94  Changed command line switches for increased similarity
  31.                  with other programs and increased intelligibility. We
  32.                  held off doing this so you wouldn't have to change
  33.                  batch files and such, but we thought it was more
  34.                  important to make this change now and make it easier on
  35.                  everyone in the long run. If you have a batch file that
  36.                  calls Snooper, and it used to run fine and now does
  37.                  funny stuff, you probably need to update the command

  49. 3.24       2/94  In the CMOS screen, when you select a hard drive type,
  50.                  Snooper will now better report user-defined and invalid
  51.                  types. You can cycle through 255 types.
  52. 3.23       1/94  Removed "Hexium" detection, which returned false
  53.                  positives on a few machines.
  54. 3.22       1/94  Added another command line switch, "/I[DESkip]" and an
  55.                  associated config file option. This switch bypasses IDE
  56.                  drive model checking, which a few machines aren't
  57.                  compatible with. 
  58.                  Added another command line switch "/O[therIRQ]" and
  59.                  config file option. This switch forces Snooper to use
  60.                  an alternative IRQ testing routine. It is more
  61.                  compatible with some systems but tends to be less
  62.                  accurate, so if the default one works, use it.
  63. 3.21       1/94  Fixed a bug in the editor that caused lines containing
  64.                  tildes ("~") in AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, and
  65.                  SNOOPER.LOG files to display incorrectly. Fixed another
  66.                  bug that made the cursor disappear after the user
  67.                  viewed the editor's help screen. Fixed another that
  68.                  caused the editor's cursor to disappear if you enter
  69.                  the editor again after saving a file.
  70. 3.20       1/94  Fixed Advanced Power Management (APM) detection.
  71. 3.19       1/94  Fixed a bug that prevented a few correct license
  72.                  numbers from being entered. Sorry!
  73. 3.18       1/94  Fixed a bug that prevented the automatic use of
  74.                  monochrome colors on monochrome video cards (MDA,
  75.                  Hercules, mono VGA).
  76. 3.17       1/94  Both MS- and PC-DOS version 3.30 report they are
  77.                  PC-DOS, so Snooper now reports 3.30 as "MS/PC-DOS
  78.                  3.30." Also, Snooper will now report PC-DOS 6.10 as
  79.                  such, even though that version reports itself as 6.00.
  80. 3.16       1/94  In reporting fax/modems on the Diagnostics screen,
  81.                  Snooper will now only report classes over one. So if
  82.                  you used to see "0,1,2" you will now see "1,2" (the "0"
  83.                  only means "data modem" anyway, so it's implied).
  84. 3.15       1/94  Snooper will no longer automatically insert default
  85.                  values in the CMOS (memory, date, etc.) if it finds
  86.                  invalid values or an incorrect checksum. Doing so had
  87.                  caused problems on a few machines that don't calculate
  88.                  the CMOS checksum in the standard way.
  89. 3.14       1/94  Fixed a bug with the Benchmark screen that caused the
  90.                  Video benchmark to be reported on the wrong scale if
  91.                  you returned to the screen after running the benchmark. 
  92.                  For example, it would report 46 on a 100 cps scale
  93.                  instead of 46K on a 100 K cps scale.
  94. 3.13       1/94  If a VESA driver reports the VGA card has 768K, Snooper
  95.                  will report it as 1M, to avoid confusion.
  96. 3.12       1/94  Fixed a bug in the editor that turned the cursor off on
  97.                  EGA systems. The cursor now stays on.
  98. 3.11       1/94  Added more computer types, including a couple Compaqs
  99.                  and the IBM Thinkpad 750 laptop.
  100. 3.10*  11/17/93  Added Netware revision on network screen. It appears as
  101.                  a letter after the version. Also on the Network screen,
  102.                  fixed MLID version bug that would cause version 2.01 to
  103.                  appear as 2.1.
  104. 3.09      11/93  Added Current Directory report to Snooper's disk
  105.                  information.
  106. 3.08      11/93  Snooper will now accept long forms for its command line
  107.                  parameters and switches, making Snooper batch files
  108.                  self-documenting. It still accepts the single-letter
  109.                  abbreviations. Because of this change, you may no
  110.                  longer join command line switches. For example,
  111.                  "snooper -bq" is no longer acceptable; you would need
  112.                  to use "snooper -b q." See the manual and Snooper's
  113.                  first help screen for more details. 
  114. 3.07      11/93  Fixed the problem that caused Micro Channel systems to
  115.                  lock up in the Diagnostics screen.
  116. 3.06      11/93  In the IDE Model report, if the drive is a Conner
  117.                  Peripherals, Snooper now removes the word "Peripherals"
  118.                  so the model name itself is visible in the report.
  119. 3.05      11/93  Fixed Pentium detection (it was reporting "Hexium").
  120.                  Adjusted the Clock Speed report to better differentiate
  121.                  between 60- and 66-MHz Pentiums (Pentia?). For CPUs
  122.                  with integrated math coprocessors (i.e., the 486 and
  123.                  Pentium), Snooper now reports "internal" instead of
  124.                  "built in" for the NDP report.
  125. 3.04      10/93  Added detection of 400 more MicroChannel cards,
  126.                  bringing the total to over 1,100.
  127. 3.03      10/93  On the Diagnostics screen, in the IRQ and DMA lists,
  128.                  Snooper no longer reports "Reserved" for resources not
  129.                  assigned to a hardware device. If the resource doesn't
  130.                  appear to be reserved, Snooper reports "Available." If
  131.                  the resource has been reserved, Snooper reports "In
  132.                  use." Also, DMA channel four is no longer detected
  133.                  because it is used internally and isn't available for
  134.                  installable devices.
  135. 3.02      10/93  Removed CMOS checksum on the Main screen's Extended
  136.                  Memory report. The CMOS screen will tell you if there
  137.                  is an error.
  138. 3.01      10/93  Added differentiation of DOS versions 4.00 and 4.01.
  139. 3.00      10/93  Added detection of Plug-'n'-Play capability to the BIOS
  140.                  report. This specification allows P-n-P ISA cards to be
  141.                  automatically configured through software, like MCA and
  142.                  EISA cards are now.
  143. 2.99      10/93  Snooper will now report if the computer has both
  144.                  MicroChannel and ISA buses.
  145. 2.98      10/93  Added detection of several more computer types,
  146.                  bringing the total to over 110.
  147. 2.96      10/93  Added detection of several disk caches to the main
  148.                  screen. See the manual for details. Had to condense the
  149.                  Keyboard report slightly, with no loss of info.
  150. 2.86      10/93  Oops! For some reason we thought floppy drives used DMA
  151.                  channel three, when actually they use channel two.
  152.                  Snooper's display has been updated to reflect this
  153.                  revelation.
  154. 2.85      10/93  Added detection of XGA amd XGA-2 video to Video report.
  155.                  This will work on MicroChannel bus systems.
  156. 2.80      10/93  After exiting the built-in editor, Snooper will prompt
  157.                  the user to reboot only if changes were made and the
  158.                  file was successfully saved. Snooper will wait for a
  159.                  keypress if there was an error saving the file.
  160.                  Otherwise, Snooper will immediately return you to the
  161.                  Main Screen. If you choose to reboot, Snooper will
  162.                  pause in case write-delayed caching is enabled, to
  163.                  ensure the file is actually written to the disk.
  164. 2.78       9/93  Fixed an apparently long-standing bug that prevented
  165.                  Snooper from recognizing some older IBM models and
  166.                  others by name.
  167. 2.76       9/93  Snooper should less often report gibberish in the "IDE
  168.                  model" report.
  169. 2.75       9/93  Defined default scales for the graphs on the Benchmark
  170.                  screen, according to CPU type. So, for example, the
  171.                  default scales for a 486 machine would be higher than
  172.                  one for a 386. Now, when a machine is so fast it makes
  173.                  the graph change color, it means the machine is fast
  174.                  for its class.
  175. 2.70       9/93  Added reboot function to allow the user to reboot from
  176.                  within Snooper after changing the CMOS or CONFIG.SYS or
  177.                  AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  178. 2.68       9/93  Improved Snooper's disk benchmark, adding sequential
  179.                  reads to the random ones and computing a weighted
  180.                  score.
  181. 2.66       9/93  Snooper should be able to report more information about
  182.                  a second hard drive, if there is one.
  183. 2.65       9/93  Added detection of DOS 6's DoubleSpace drive
  184.                  compression, reported on the Disk Status line.
  185. 2.64       9/93  Added detection of Advanced Power Management (APM) and
  186.                  its version. It's reported after the computer type.

  188.                  Specification (CAS) and FaxBIOS, and their versions.

  191. 2.62       8/93  Improved VESA video memory detection under VESA 1.0.
  192.                  Snooper can now report half-megabyte values (e.g.,
  193.                  1.5M, 2.5M). You may have a bit more memory than
  194.                  Snooper reports. For example, you may have 2M when
  195.                  Snooper reports 1.5M. Under newer versions of the VESA
  196.                  spec, Snooper should always report video memory
  197.                  accurately.
  198. 2.61       8/93  Snooper will now retore the cursor upon exit, and set
  199.                  ERRORLEVEL to at least 32, if a runtime error occurs
  200.                  (but that *never* happens!).
  201. 2.60       8/93  Added one to the Cylinders report for hard drives. This
  202.                  should now match what the CMOS reports.
  203. 2.59       8/93  Improved error-reporting while trying to save a .CFG
  204.                  file in Setup screen. Snooper will now report if the
  205.                  disk is full, an existing .CFG file is read-only, etc.
  206. 2.58       8/93  The benchmark graphs now change color if they change
  207.                  scale, so you can see at a distance that the scale is
  208.                  not the default. Also, the benchmark graphs are
  209.                  retained when you return to the main screen and then go
  210.                  back to the Benchmark screen.
  211. 2.57       8/93  Added detection of fax modems, and the classes they
  212.                  support, on the Diagnostics screen. The new report,
  213.                  "fax class," will display for example, "0,1" if your
  214.                  fax modem supports classes zero and one.
  215. 2.52       8/93  Removed detection and supression of "fake" Novell
  216.                  parallel ports on Diagnostics screen. Now you can see
  217.                  the port status that other programs see, even if these
  218.                  ports aren't physically present. Also, Snooper now only
  219.                  looks for three LPT ports, not four.
  220. 2.51       8/93  Removed detection of Ballpoint mice because there were
  221.                  too many false positives.
  222. 2.50       8/93  Added beeps to alert you to error conditions (e.g.
  223.                  invalid drive). This should be helpful especially to
  224.                  visually-impaired users. When you hear a beep, look at
  225.                  the message line in the lower right corner to see what
  226.                  the beep was for. The beeps can be toggled on and off
  227.                  via the Setup screen.
  228. 2.48       8/93  Added Benchmark screen, accessible with <Alt-E> (hey,
  229.                  <Alt-B> was already being used!), performs CPU, video,
  230.                  and hard disk benchmarks.
  231. 2.38       8/93  Added Adaptec SCSI host adapter identification. It is
  232.                  reported on the same line as IDE model would be.
  233. 2.37       8/93  Changed the log filename from SNOOPER to SNOOPLOG to
  234.                  make it consistent with the SNOOPCFG variable (see
  235.                  below).
  236. 2.36       8/93  You can now define a SNOOPCFG environment variable to
  237.                  designate the configuration file Snooper should read
  238.                  (e.g. "set snoopcfg=c:\control\johnv.cfg"). Very useful
  239.                  on networks when set in a login script or in
  240.                  AUTOEXEC.BAT (don't forget Alt-A will let you edit
  241.                  AUTOEXEC.BAT!).
  242. 2.35       8/93  Added help line on the bottom line of each screen;
  243.                  removed the much shorter help lines above the message
  244.                  boxes.
  245. 2.32       8/93  Changed the keystroke used to print an invoice from <R>
  246.                  for Register to <O> for Order, perhaps making it
  247.                  clearer for some of you.
  248. 2.31       7/93  Improved Setup screen's user interface to match that of
  249.                  the CMOS screen (see below).
  250. 2.30       7/93  Added field to allow or disallow CMOS editing. This
  251.                  feature is for network administrators who want to
  252.                  prevent knowledgable-enough-to-be-dangerous users from
  253.                  changing their computers' configurations.
  254. 2.29       7/93  Added CMOS configuration viewing/editing screen. Press
  255.                  <Alt-M> from the main screen to see it. If CMOS editing
  256.                  is allowed (check the Setup screen), you can use the
  257.                  highlighted letters, and the arrow and Tab keys to move
  258.                  from one field to another. Once you're on the field you
  259.                  wish to change, press +/- or PgUp/PgDn to modify that
  260.                  field. If CMOS editing is disallowed, you will only be
  261.                  able to view the CMOS configuration.
  262. 2.19       7/93  Snooper now searches for ROM BIOS extensions every
  263.                  256 bytes instead of every 2K, sniffing out more
  264.                  adapter cards.
  265. 2.18       7/93  Snooper can now differentiate between Dell 450DEs and
  266.                  466DEs. Changed the order form into an invoice. Now
  267.                  business users can pay for Snooper on a purchase order
  268.                  and already have an invoice to send to Accounting.
  269. 2.17       6/93  Fixed detection of 2.8M drives. It should work now.
  270. 2.16*   6/26/93  Fixed minor cosmetic bug in drive list. Also, now you
  271.                  can press <Escape> or <Enter> when changing default
  272.                  disk drive in Setup screen.
  273. 2.15*   6/18/93  Fixed minor bug that prevented you from using cursor
  274.                  keys to switch from drive A: to the next drive in a
  275.                  system with one floppy and a hard or network drive.
  276.                  Snooper no longer displays the B: drive in its drive
  277.                  list if the system has no physical B: drive.
  278. 2.14       6/93  You can now print the display to PRN with <Alt-P>.
  279.                  <Alt-F> now logs the system files.  <Alt-L> still logs
  280.                  to a file.
  281. 2.13       6/93  Added detection of DOS revision level for versions 5
  282.                  and up. It appears as a letter after the DOS version.
  283. 2.12       5/93  Snooper now more-vigorously checks the IDE model for
  284.                  garbage characters. This line should now be blank for
  285.                  non-IDE drives.
  286. 2.11       5/93  In the editor, you can now restore a deleted line with
  287.                  <Ctrl-R>. To restore other deleted text (e.g. words),
  288.                  continue to use <Ctrl-U>.
  289. 2.10       5/93  Added network information screen, accessible via
  290.                  <Alt-N>. Currently, this screen provides info only on
  291.                  Novell networks. See the manual for more details.
  292.                  Removed the Western Digital network card detection
  293.                  routine, as it turned out to be the responsible for
  294.                  Snooper breaking the network connection. Now when you
  295.                  use the Diagnostics screen on a network, you usually
  296.                  stay connected.
  297. 2.09       5/93  Added detection of Pentium (tm) (and Hexium?)
  298. processors.
  299. 2.08       5/93  If your system has more than 19 logical drives, Snooper
  300.                  now displays them in two rows. Also, the end bracket
  301.                  immediately follows the last drive letter.
  302. 2.07       5/93  Now you can press <Enter> to indicate "Yes" to "(Y/n)?"
  303.                  prompts in the editor (e.g. saving the file).
  304. 2.06       5/93  Added detection of over 700 MicroChannel adapter cards
  305.                  via the new Bus Screen. Access it with <Alt-B>. See the
  306.                  manual for more details.
  307. 2.05       5/93  Improved detection of network drives. It's accurate
  308.                  now, but the minimum DOS version had to be raised to
  309.                  3.10. This shouldn't cause a problem for most of you.
  310. 2.04       4/93  Added detection of Toshiba DOS and Olivetti DOS.
  311. 2.03       4/93  Added detection of several more Dell computers.
  312. 2.02       4/93  Added fifty new computer types, mostly IBMs. Snooper
  313.                  can now recognize over 100 computers by name.
  314. 2.01       4/93  Snooper can now distinguish between LANtastic and LAN
  315.                  Manager. Added report of PC LAN and LAN Manager

  317. 2.00*   3/30/93  Improved VESA video memory detection. Snooper now
  318.                  retrieves the memory amount directly from the VESA BIOS
  319.                  if the VESA version is at least 1.01. Also fixed a bug
  320.                  that caused the VESA version to be reported
  321.                  incorrectly.
  322. 1.99       3/93  Added detection of a Logitech mouse driver's version.
  323.                  Also, in the IRQ list on the Diagnostics screen, if you
  324.                  have a new enough mouse driver, Snooper will report if
  325.                  it's a TSR loaded in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
  326.                  ("MOUSE.COM"), or a device driver loaded in your
  327.                  CONFIG.SYS file ("MOUSE.SYS").
  328. 1.98       3/93  Added more rigorous testing to determine if a parallel
  329.                  port really exists before testing its IRQ and status.
  330.                  Rearranged Parallel Port Status reports.
  331. 1.97       3/93  Expanded configuration file with blank space so we can
  332.                  add more options in the future while maintaining
  333.                  backward compatibility with existing .CFG files.
  334. 1.96       3/93  Added report of parallel port IRQ. Keep in mind that
  335.                  many I/O cards with parallel ports do not generate the
  336.                  IRQ properly. This report uses parentheses like the COM
  337.                  port IRQ (see below).
  338. 1.95       3/93  Added indication of a COM port's IRQ being enabled. If
  339.                  the IRQ number does not appear in parentheses on the
  340.                  Diagnostics screen, that COM port's IRQ was already
  341.                  enabled before Snooper was run. If the IRQ is written
  342.                  in parentheses, the IRQ is not active on that port.
  343.                  Also, COM port info is centered now.
  344. 1.94       3/93  Added detection of the port address of Western Digital
  345.                  and compatible network cards, displayed on the
  346.                  Diagnostics screen.
  347. 1.93       3/93  Added an internal text editor for CONFIG.SYS,
  348.                  AUTOEXEC.BAT, and SNOOPER.LOG files. Added
  349.                  configuration option for toggling between using the
  350.                  internal editor or an external one.
  351. 1.92       3/93  If you were using only a tiny percentage of a disk,
  352.                  Snooper may have shown an empty bar graph, perhaps
  353.                  misleading you into thinking the disk was empty. Now if
  354.                  any amount of disk space is being used, Snooper shows
  355.                  at least one block in the graph.
  356. 1.91       3/93  Added logging of CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
  357.                  From Snooper's main or Diagnostics screens with <Alt-P>
  358.                  and from the command line, with the /P switch. This
  359.                  feature will copy the contents of both files to the log
  360.                  file. The switch can be used with or without the
  361.                  logging switch, /L. It will use the log filename
  362.                  specified with /L.
  363. 1.90       2/93  Changed format of configuration file. Config files made
  364.                  with earlier versions will be incompatible with future
  365.                  versions of Snooper, so just delete them and make new
  366.                  ones.
  367. 1.89       2/93  Instead of prohibiting you from invoking Snooper's
  368.                  Diagnostics screen under multitaskers and networks, now
  369.                  Snooper just warns about the dangers involved and asks
  370.                  if you wish to continue.
  371. 1.88       2/93  Fixed editor loading routine to correctly load a batch
  372.                  file called EDIT.BAT by loading a secondary command
  373.                  processor (e.g., COMMAND.COM, NDOS.COM). Snooper now
  374.                  ensures the relevant files exist before invoking the
  375.                  editor. Added a wait for keypress after editing before
  376.                  restoring Snooper's screen.
  377. 1.87       2/93  Reassigned editing keys: <Alt-C> loads only CONFIG.SYS,
  378.                  and <Alt-A> loads only AUTOEXEC.BAT. Using <Alt-A> for
  379.                  this feature forced us to change the (Advanced)
  380.                  Diagnostics key to <Alt-D> for Diagnostics.
  381. 1.86       2/93  Improved Setup screen's readability by aligning default
  382.                  options and changing the choices from Yes/No to
  383.                  Yes/Auto.
  384. 1.85       2/93  Reversed action of PgUp/PgDn, Up/Down, Left/Right in
  385.                  help screens and main screen to make those keystrokes
  386.                  more in line with convention.  Pressing PgUp will now
  387.                  move you, for example, from page three to page two of
  388.                  the help screens, or from drive B: to drive C:.
  389. 1.84       2/93  Added logic to guess where a mouse is located even if
  390.                  the normal detection routine doesn't find it.
  391. 1.83       2/93  Redesigned Diagnostics screen, added message area and
  392.                  help line consistent with main screen.

  428.                  reside in the current directory or on the path. 
  429.                  "Ed-It!" version 3.0 (a public domain editor, included)
  430.                  will open both files at once in separate windows.
